Subject: Historic Core Conservation Area Appraisal

Dear Sir/Madam

Cambridge City Council has published for public consultation a review of its
Historic Core Conservation Area Appraisal. We are inviting comments on the
appraisal to be received during the period 8th February - 18th March 2016.

Conservation area appraisals identify and describe what it is within areas
of 'special architectural or historic interest' that makes them worth
protecting and improving. They are a reference for guiding the form and
content of new development and the determination of development proposals.
An adopted appraisal will be material to Planning appeal decisions.

The Central Conservation Area was designated in 1969 and has since been
extended. It is the largest conservation area in Cambridge and the appraisal
covers its historic core area including open spaces such as the college
backs and Jesus Green. As well as being of huge architectural and historic
interest, the historic core is also a very complex area. This review
therefore uses a "street by street" format (with the streets listed in
alphabetical order in section 3).

Significant changes have occurred over the last ten years such as the
completion of the Grand Arcade and the construction of mixed-use development
at Bradwell's Court (Christ's Lane). Major new buildings for Cambridge
University departments have/are being erected at Fen Causeway and Tennis
Court Lane.

The key part of the appraisal is the street-by-street analysis which looks
in detail at all the streets in the core area. This has been thoroughly
reviewed and the descriptions extended.

The Appraisal can be accessed on line at
https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/current-consultations

A hard copy will be available for inspection at the City Council's Customer
Service Centre, Mandela House, 4 Regent Street, Cambridge CB2 1BY.

Comments should be made on line to heconsultations at cambridge.gov.uk
<mailto:heconsultations at cambridge.gov.uk> or by post to: Historic Core
Response, Urban Design & Conservation, Planning Services, The Guildhall,
Market Square, Cambridge CB2 3QJ

We encourage you to view the appraisal and to contribute any information you
think might usefully be added that helps identify and protect the special
interest of the historic city centre.
