Please note that the Local Plan Hearings commenced again last Tuesday 7th June. Wendy and I attended the session on 9th June in Cambourne, at which we witnessed a clumsy attempt to demolish the Councils’ Green Belt policy by suggesting it should be carved up into categories. The Councils’ representatives stood their ground. 

 

We are all very stretched at this time, but we would beg you to attend the Hearing sessions where you can and if you can. The next is on Tuesday 14th June, at 10am in the Council Chamber at the Guildhall. Robin Pellew will be appearing for Cambridge PPF, and John Preston, whom you will have heard on 3rd October last year on the Historic Environment of Cambridge, will be discussing issues including the River Cam, Tall Buildings, and the lack of a Historic Environment Strategy. John is also hoping to speak about strategic issues (including the proposal for a guided bus link across Ditton Meadows) raised in his statement under Matter 2, but which the Inspector postponed from consideration at that stage. Sessions in the morning are at 10 – 13hrs, and in the afternoon from 14 – 17hrs. Next week is dedicated to Heritage Policies and all hearings are at the Guildhall. John Preston is ‘on’ first with the River Cam.

Built by John Hodson, butler of Pembroke, for his daughter to bathe discretely from, Hodson’s Folly today is a bit of a mess what with graffiti, manure and human picnic detritus. The Council would like to restore it and discourage our bovine friends (and human friends!) from doing their worst, and you may have views about the degree or type of restoration. Cambridge PPF are also involved. The deadline for comments is 24th June

 

2.    Croft Gardens & Holmcroft on Barton Road

The application is to demolish and replace with redbrick 4-storey blocks, not just for students of King’s College, but also for the market. Croft Gardens is an interesting example of Art Deco and the 1840s Holmcroft a rare relic of a farmhouse on Barton Road. Fortunately, the buildings now have BLI status but this is not absolute protection, so please write. Deadline for comments 16th June, although in practice later submissions will be accepted.

3.    Student accommodation and new ‘shopping units’ (why can’t they call them shops?) on King’s Street by Christ’s College:
