Dear All,

*Update 18 March, 2026*

*Important Consultation on the Urban Development Corporation for Greater
Cambridge *

*deadline for comments 1 April, 2026 *

The Government has launched a major consultation about a proposed new
organisation called the *Urban Development Corporation (UDC) for Greater
Cambridge*. This is important to all of us because the new body would take
over key planning functions for major developments from our local Councils,
shifting decision-making power from locally elected representatives to a
government-appointed board. Last night councillors at South Cambs DC
Extraordinary Full Council Meeting discussed their strong opposition to the
plans for a new Development Corporation for Greater Cambridge. They raised
concerns about shifting major planning powers away from locally elected
councils and the impact this could have on community.

Cambridge City Council will hold similar discussions tomorrow evening (19
March) at an Extraordinary Council Meeting.

The City Council response on the consultation will be from the Leader of
the Council. It will not be voted on by councillors

FeCRA has asked how the Council knows the views of residents if it hasn’t
asked them. Most residents don’t even know there is a government
consultation. See link below

*Who decides Cambridge’s Future? *

Cambridge Past, Present and Future (CPPF) are holding an event about the
proposal for an Urban Development Corporation at Wolfson College (Lee Seng
Tee Hall) on *Monday* *23 March, 7-8:30*. There will be a panel discussion
and then a Q&A session

Please share information about the event with friends and networks. Whether
you can or can't attend the meeting, please look at the Government website
and respond to the Consultation. The outcome will affect everyone.

We will be in touch again very shortly with more information and key points
that some of you have shared about responding to the consultation.

Best wishes,

Wendy
