Local historian Allan Brigham comments: Cambridge is renowned for the
quality of its architecture and public spaces. But too little of this is
seen in the fast growing neighbourhoods beyond the City Centre. These
latest plans for Mill Road could be on any inner city arterial road. They
do not say 'Romsey' or 'Cambridge'. Please use the ‘*Commen*t’
sections in *Questions
2 & 6 of the Consultation* to express your view and highlight shortcomings.
All Cambridge residents can comment.Closing date for comments :* Monday, 11
April.*


*Original Objectives of Romsey Town Square Project 2013: *

To provide a focal point on ‘Romsey High Street’, and give it a firm sense
of place by:

1.     Defining Romsey as a Distinctive Neighbourhood: Through public art
on the site

2.     Identifying it as a Distinct Breathing Space on Mill Road: Through
using quality building materials associated with Cambridge city centre.

3.     Providing  a Public Space for Social Interaction: Where people could
sit to watch the world go by, or just chat.

4.     To enhance the newly created Conservation Area


* Failings of Council Proposals for Romsey Town Square 2016:*

1.     Minimal seating, apparently designed to limit social interaction. If
there is a problem with anti social behaviour then deal with this
appropriately, not by abandoning public places.

2.     No public art

3.     No distinctive, quality materials specified

4.     Scheme fails to wrap around St Philips Church, recently restored and
a highlight of the new Conservation area.

5.     Scheme ignores recommendations of the East Area Residents Workshop
in 2013: 'Create town square (quality paving/seating/public art) by Mill
Road Co-op/St Philip's Church’ [Romsey] and strong local support
(attached).

6.     The Consultation is weighted towards questions about bike stands and
tree grills.  Bike stands are important, but there is a need for balance.
Why are these not in Co-op car park or in front of other shops too?


Cambridge can do much better than this, concludes Allan.
