[Members] Does Cambridge deserve better?

Dear All,

A reminder that Mayor James Palmer will speak at the event "Does Cambridge
Deserve Better: A new vision for the region, tomorrow.

FeCRA has been invited to participate. There should be a good turn out.
Come and share your views. You don't need to have registered to attend but
it would be helpful for the organisers of the event ( members of the 54
community groups that signed the letter to the Greater Cambridge
Partnership) to know numbers.


The event "Does Cambridge Deserve Better" is timely because increasingly
many of you are sharing with us details of the ugly piecemeal developer led
growth that is impacting the city on all fronts.  Quality of life issues,
price tag, heritage report, conservation status, council corporate plan,
Local Plan appear to offer no protection. You are asking us why aren't the
planners your friends.You single out:

   - *Speed and volume of the development*


   - *Ugliness of it – eg of CB1 Station development with pop-up brothels,
   highlighted by Olly Wainwright in The Guardian  as a “Cambridge
   embarrassment”.*


   - *Aggressive expansion of “brand Cambridge” student housing *


   - *Transience, impact of buy to let & houses in multiple occupation*


   -
*Demolition of Cambridge character: impact on the River Cam, homes, trees,
   streets, gardens, public space *


   - *Massive impact on wildlife corridors – hedgehogs, bats, birds, newts,
   deer *


   - *No affordable housing to compensate for the ugliness*
   -
*Cambridge communities all over the city are paying the price *

I attach a leaflet from North Newtown RA about the demolition on Panton St.
Please do write and object. The deadline for people to object is Sept 8. We
will be following up shortly about concerns.
